Aphrodisiac herbs by Ray Sahelian, M.D. Information on natural female and male aphrodisiac herbs

Are there natural female and male aphrodisiac herbs that really work?

Most Westerners would be surprised to find out that there are dozens of natural male and female aphrodisiac herbs that enhance sexual drive and pleasure in both sexes, along with enhancing erectile function and providing more satisfying orgasms and climaxes — and some of these aphrodisiac herbs are quite potent. I am familiar with several dozen of these substances which I personally tested and supervised my research staff while writing my book Natural Sex Boosters. These natural male and female aphrodisiac herbs not only enhance libido, but they enhance most aspects of the human sexual response, particularly if they are used in combination. Aphrodisiac herbs, when used in combination, are just as good as Viagra, Cialis, and Levitra in helping with erectile function and boosting sexual stamina, libido, and performance. Some of them may take a little longer to work -- for instance Tongkat Ali and Muira Puama sometimes take 2 or 3 days -- but when they actually start working, you will be amazed! In fact, a combination called Passion Rx
works extremely well since it has small amounts of a number of herbs to take advantage of the benefits and keep side effects to a minimum.

Aphrodisiac recipe
I've come across many cookbooks touted as providing aphrodisiac recipes. At this time I am not convinced that most of them work for their intended purpose. Perhaps the whole atmosphere of cooking with a lover and enjoying a nice meal with a little bit of wine could set the mood for sex, but the food itself should not be confused as having aphrodisiac properties. But, there could be an exception. I think an aphrodisiac recipe would include cold water fish, fish eggs such as salmon roe, and vegetable juices for flavonoids, along with a dish that has some spices such as nutmeg or clove. I am not sure if this aphrodisiac recipe would provide immediate benefits, but it could over several days.

Can you tell me about hormones as aphrodisiac enhancers?
At least two over the counter hormones can act as an aphrodisiac, including dhea and pregnenolone.

Aphrodisiac Herb Research Update
Effect of Tribulus terrestris on nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate-diaphorase activity and androgen receptors in rat brain.
 J Ethnopharmacol. 2005 Jan 4;96(1-2):127-32.
Tribulus terrestris L. (Zygophyllaceae) have been used as an aphrodisiac both in the Indian and Chinese traditional systems of medicine. Administration of Tribulus terrestris extract increased sexual behaviour and intracavernous pressure both in normal and castrated rats and these effects were probably due to the androgen increasing property of tribulus. The objective of the present study is to evaluate the effect of tribulus on nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate-diaphorase (NADPH-d) activity and androgen receptor (AR) immunoreactivity in rat brain. Conclusion: Chronic treatment of tribulus terrestris in rats increases the NADPH-d positive neurons and AR immunoreactivity in the PVN region. The findings from the present study add further support to the aphrodisiac claims of tribulus terrestris.

Aphrodisiac effect of 50% ethanolic extract of Syzygium aromaticum (L.) Merr. & Perry. (clove) on sexual behaviour of normal male rats.
BMC Complement Altern Med. 2004 Nov 5;4(1):17
The flower bud of Syzygium aromaticum (L.) Merr. & Perry. ( clove) has been used in Unani medicine since ancient times as an aphrodisiac for the treatment of male sexual disorders. The present study is aimed to investigate the effect of 50% ethanolic extract of clove on general mating behaviour, libido, potency along with its likely gastric ulceration and adverse effects on sexually normal male albino rats. CONCLUSION: The results indicated that the 50% ethanolic extract of clove produced a significant and sustained increase in the sexual activity of normal male rats, without any conspicuous gastric ulceration and adverse effects. Thus, the resultant aphrodisiac effectivity of the extract lends support to the claims for its traditional usage in sexual disorders.

Aphrodisin, an aphrodisiac lipocalin secreted in hamster vaginal secretions.
Peptides. 2004 Sep;25(9):1545-52.

Vertebrates communicate through pheromones, which favor biological regulations within each species. Aphrodisin, an aphrodisiac protein belonging to the lipocalin superfamily, found in hamster vaginal secretions, is detected by the male accessory olfactory system and induces or facilitates its copulatory behavior.

Aphrodisiac drug-induced hemolysis.
J Toxicol Clin Toxicol. 2004;42(3):313-6.
Volatile alkyl nitrites have been used as an aphrodisiac during the past decades for "recreational purposes," and for intensifying sexual experience. Their use has been associated with methemoglobinemia and hemolysis. We report three patients who presented over the past year with acute hemolysis after inhalation of butyl nitrite, two of them had glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency.

Aphrodisiac properties of Montanoa tomentosa aqueous crude extract in male rats.
Pharmacol Biochem Behav. 2004 May;78(1):129-34.
Cihuapatli, the Mexican zoapatle (Montanoa tomentosa) has an extensive ethnomedical history of use as a traditional remedy as an aphrodisiac and for reproductive impairments. During the study of the ejaculatory function in rats and by testing a set of Mexican plants with medicinal properties, we observed that crude extracts of M. tomentosa facilitated ejaculation. Thus, we decided to analyze the possibility that this plant possessed sexual stimulant properties. Results: Altogether, these data reveal a facilitatory action of this extract on sexual activity and particularly on sexual arousal. Present findings provide experimental evidence that the crude extract preparation of M. tomentosa, used as a traditional remedy, possesses aphrodisiac properties.

Aphrodisiac activity of Butea frondosa Koen. ex Roxb. extract in male rats.
Phytomedicine. 2004 Feb;11(2-3):165-8.

Aphrodisiac activity of methanol extract of leaves of Passiflora incarnata Linn (passion flower)in mice.
Phytother Res. 2003 Apr;17(4):401-3.
The aphrodisiac properties of the methanol extract of leaves of Passiflora incarnata Linn. have been evaluated in mice by observing the mounting behaviour. The methanol extract of P. incarnata exhibited significant aphrodisiac behaviour in male mice at all doses, i.e. 75, 100 and 150 mg/kg.

Effect of Lepidium meyenii (Maca), a root with aphrodisiac and fertility-enhancing properties, on serum reproductive hormone levels in adult healthy men.
 J Endocrinol. 2003 Jan;176(1):163-8.
Lepidium meyenii (Maca) is a Peruvian hypocotyl that grows exclusively between 4000 and 4500 m in the central Andes. Maca is traditionally employed in the Andean region for its supposed aphrodisiac and/or fertility-enhancing properties.

Aphrodisiac evaluation in non-copulator male rats after chronic administration of Eurycoma longifolia Jack.
Fundam Clin Pharmacol. 2001 Aug;15(4):265-8.
The aphrodisiac effect of Eurycoma longifolia Jack (Tongkat Ali) was evaluated in noncopulator male rats using an electrical cage. Fractions of E. longifolia Jack decreased the hesitation time of noncopulator male rats, throughout the investigation period. Furthermore, it possessed a transient increase in the percentage of the male rats responding to the right choice, more than 50% of the male rats scored "right choice" after 3 weeks post-treatment and the effect became more prominent after 8 weeks post-treatment (only 40-50% of the control male rats responded to the right choice) using the electrical copulation cage. Hence, this study lends further support to the use of the plant by indigenous populations as a traditional medicine for its aphrodisiac property.

Additional Herbs with potential aphrodisiac properties not mentioned in Natural Sex Boosters book

Aframomum Melegueta
The effects of aqueous extracts of Aframomum melegueta and Piper guineense on the sexual behavior of male rats were studied, considering many criteria, such as penile erection, copulatory behaviour and orientation activities towards themselves (genital grooming) and female rats (ano-genital sniffing, mounting). These plant extracts were found to enhance the orientation of males towards females by increasing mounting and ano-genital investigatory behavior. Results of this study showed that A. melegueta and P. guineense have aphrodisiac properties.

Bois bandé
Bois bandé is the name commonly used in a large part of the Caribbean for the tree Roupala montana. The plant is not only found in Grenada and Trinidad, but also in Dominica, where it is known as gimauve or gommier tree and in Costa Rica it is known as danto amarillo or zorillo. The bark of this tree is famous for its aphrodisiac properties. Locals soak a strip of the bark for a week in rum, then filter the rum and take a small glass of the extract. The extract is also known as macoucherie rum. No studies are available in the Western literature to give us any clues on this herb’s aphrodisiac benefits or mechanism of action. Bois bandé is available as a liquid and capsules.

Burada
The bark of Parinari campestris (Chrysobalanaceae), in Guyana known as burada, is frequently used as a aphrodisiac in the same way as bois bandé. This tree also occurs in neighbouring Suriname where it is known as the red fugu.

Ching chun bao
Claims have been made that it Increases mental capacity, counters fatigue, improves resistance to disease, promotes blood circulation, benefits heart and kidney, and is an aphrodisiac.

Chuchuhuasi
Chuchuhuasi or chuchuwasi is a common name for some members of the genus Maytenus (belonging to the Celastraceae family), found in Peru and Colombia. An infusion of the bark is used not only as a famed aphrodisiac but also as a proven muscle relaxant and a remedy for rheumatism.

Fadogia agrestis is an aphrodisiac herb found in Nigeria.

Policias fruticosum
Dinh lang (Polycias fruticosum L.) root extract (DLRE) was found to have a pharmacological spectrum similar to Ginseng. Experimental and clinical studies have shown a wide range of pronounced stimulatory effects of DLRE which showed low toxicity. It increases mental and physical performance and could be considered an aphrodisiac.

Terminalia catappa
Tropical almond is a large deciduous stately tree, originally from India, growing up to 90 feet. It thrives as an ornamental tree in many tropical cities in the world. In Taiwan the fallen leaves of tropical almond are used as a herbal drug in the treatment of liver related diseases. The leaves contain agents for chemoprevention of cancer and probably have anticarciogenic potential. The kernel of Indian almond has shown aphrodisiac activity; it can probably be used in treatment of some forms of sexual inadequacies (premature ejaculation).

Trichopus zetlanicus is a rare wild plant which is endemic to the Agasthyar hills of Western Ghats in India. Among local tribes, Trichopus Zeylanicus is know as "Arogyappacha", meaning green health and vitality. The tribes claim that one can live days together without food and still remain energetic and can go on performing even very vigorous physical work or exercise by eating few fresh fruit of Trichopus. They also claim that it is an aphrodisiac and to remain healthy, agile, young and resistant to various diseases or infections, one should consume the fresh fruits of "Arogyappacha" regularly.

Aphrodisiac activity of Butea frondosa Koen. ex Roxb. extract in male rats.
Phytomedicine. 2004 Feb;11(2-3):165-8.
In the present study, the aphrodisiac activity of Butea frondonsa Koen. ex Roxb (Papillionaceae) bark extract was investigated. The extract (400 mg/kg body wt./day) was administered orally by gavage for 28 days. Mount latency (ML), intromission latency (IL), ejaculation latency (EL), mounting frequency (MF), intromission frequency (IF), ejaculation frequency (EF) and post-ejaculatory interval (PEI) were the parameters observed before and during the sexual behavior study at day 0, 7, 10, 14, 21, and 28. The extract reduced significantly ML, IL, EL and PEI. The extract also increased significantly MF, IF and EF. These aphrodisiac effects were observed in sexually active and inactive male rats.

The relaxation of isolated rabbit corpus cavernosum by the herb medicine Catuama (ginger herb, muira puama, and others) and its constituents.
Phytother Res. 2001 Aug;15(5):416-21.
The effects of the Brazilian herb medicine Catuama and each of its plant constituents (Paullinia cupana, Trichilia catigua, Zingiber officinalis and Ptychopetalum olacoides - muira puama) were investigated on rabbit corpus cavernosum using a bioassay cascade. Our results show that of the four extracts assayed, P. cupana was the most effective as an aphrodisiac, indicating that it is the main extract responsible for the relaxing effect of Catuama on rabbit cavernosal tissue.

Xanthones isolated from Securidaca longependunculata herb with activity against erectile dysfunction.
Fitoterapia. 2004 Jul;75(5):497-9.
1,7-Dimethoxy-2-hydroxy-xanthone and 1,4-dihydroxy-7-methoxy-xanthone isolated from Securidaca longependunculata were tested for their activity on rabbit corpus cavernosum in vitro. Only the former relaxed the corpus cavernosum by 63% at 1.8x10(-5) mg/ml.

Flavonoids from Achyrocline satureioides herb with relaxant effects on the smooth muscle of Guinea pig corpus cavernosum.
Phytomedicine. 2004;11(4):366-9.
Ethanol extract of the aerial parts of Achyrocline satureioides (Lam.) DC. (Asteraceae) showed a significant, dose dependent, relaxant effect on the smooth muscle of corpus cavernosum strips, obtained from Guinea pig (65.5 +/- 4.1% of relaxation at the dose of 25.0 mg/ml). Bioassay guided fractionation of this extract furnished two flavonoids, quercetin and quercetin 3-methyl ether, with important vasorelaxing effects on the corpus cavernosum strips (79.8 +/- 8.4 and 66.0 +/- 4.8% of relaxation respectively at the dose of 0.075 mg/ml). Two methyl derivatives of quercetin obtained by synthesis, quercetin 3,7,3',4'-tetramethylether and quercetin 3,5,7,3',4'-pentamethylether, showed similar relaxant effects at the dose of 0.075 mg/ml (86.4 +/- 8.5 and 67.31 +/- 1.4% of relaxation respectively). The results show that the ethanol extract of A. satureioides and the assayed compounds exhibit significant vasorelaxing properties. Additionally, it is shown that the number of methyl groups in the quercetin nucleus has no significant influence on the effectiveness of these compounds.

Argentinian plant extracts with relaxant effect on the smooth muscle of the corpus cavernosum of guinea pig.
Universidad de Buenos Aires, Buenos Aires, Argentina.
Extracts of different polarity from Baccharis trimera, Haplopappus rigidus Huperzia saururus, Maytenus ilicifolia, Satureja parvifolia and Senecio eriophyton were tested for their relaxant activity on smooth muscle using L-phenylephrine precontracted strips of corpus cavernosum obtained from Guinea pigs. The effects observed in the present study seem to validate the folk medicinal use of the tested plants as aphrodisiac and open new ways in the search for natural products with vasodilatory effects.

Aphrodisiac questions
Q. Is wine an aphrodisiac?
   A. Yes and no. Drinking wine can certainly loosen up some uptight people and make them more friendly and approachable, however wine, due to its alcohol content, can cause numbness of genital organs if too many glasses are drank. Wine does contain resveratrol and polyphenols which can act as vasodilators. Therefore, if wine is used in a small or moderate amount it can have an immediate sexual aphrodisiac effect, but if used in excess it can have the opposite genital numbing effect. In the long term, drinking a couple of ounces of wine a day could lead to better vasculature and better genital vasodilation.

Q. Does a liquid aphrodisiac product work better than a capsule?
   A. Perhaps, but a capsule gets absorbed quite well and quickly, therefore i don't see the advantage of using a liquid aphrodisiac product. Plus, the liquid aphrodisiac would be much more expensive.
