Detox diet, radiation exposure vitamins, herbs, supplements, benefit and risk by Ray Sahelian, M.D.
The idea for detoxing comes from the concern that our
bodies are constantly exposed to toxins with
harmful effects. The belief is that the body holds onto toxins in the
digestive, lymph, or gastrointestinal system as well as in skin and hair. They,
then, can cause problems such as fatigue, headaches, nausea, and a wide range of
chronic diseases. These toxins come from many sources, including:
Alcohol excess
Caffeine excess
Sugar excess.
Artificial sweeteners and other substances added to food
Pesticides or other chemicals used to grow or prepare food
Smog or other polluting substances in the air
Radiation from various sources including nuclear plants
What to take if you suspect high exposure to toxins or
radiation
Few studies are available to determine what supplements alone or in combination
and in what dosages are ideal to take when one suspects exposure to
radiation or
other toxins. Until more definitive research is done, I think the following
should be considered:
Antioxidants of all types could be of benefit, it is difficult to predict
which are most effective.
Broccoli sprout
extracts could be of benefit
Calcium D glucorate supplements
Garlic, preferably raw
Ginger has been shown to
protect the rodents from radiation induced sickness and death.
Detox diet
There are many options. One is by fasting. Then you gradually reintroduce foods.
For example, you might start with a liquid diet for one or two days. Then you
might move to four or five days of brown rice, fruit, and steamed vegetables.
Organic foods and drinks and lots of water are required on a natural detox diet.
And alcohol, caffeine, tobacco, drugs, processed or refined foods, sugar and
certain supplements are not suggested.
Some people feel better, why?
Symptoms may improve with a detox diet, but there is no evidence that this is
due to clearing toxins from the body. Instead, improvements may result from what
is and is not eaten and drunk on these diets, such as:* more water* less alcohol
and caffeine* less fat and animal proteins* fewer refined and processed foods*
more healthful, whole, plant-based foodsAs it turns out, a balanced, proper diet
is more helpful than a detox diet. Perhaps taking the best of the detox diets --
eating more fruits and vegetables and fewer processed, refined, and fatty foods,
for example -- is the way to go.
