A study shows DMAE cream is able to increase firmness of skin while another one was not so positive. Perhaps DMAE cream has anti-wrinkle potential, or perhaps it can harm skin cells. More studies are needed. See below for the abstracts.

Beyond subjective assessments, the effect of skin tensors is difficult to assess. The present 2-phase randomized double-blind split face study was designed to compare the effect of a gel containing 3% 2-dimethylaminoethanol (deanol, DMAE) with the same formulation without DMAE. In a first pilot study, sensorial assessments and measures of the skin distension under suction were performed in eight volunteers. In a second study conducted in 30 volunteers, shear wave propagation was measured. Large interindividual variations precluded any significant finding in the first study. The DMAE formulation showed, however, a significant effect characterized by increased shear wave velocity in the direction where the mechanical anisotropy of skin showed looseness. The DMAE formulation under investigation increased skin firmness.

Does DMAE cream damage skin cells
Dr. Francois Marceau of the Centre Hospitalier Universitaire de Quebec tested 2-dimethylaminoethanol (DMAE) in cultured rabbit and human skin cells. As the cells filled with DMAE, there was a quiick swelling of the cells resulting in  a thickening of the epidermal layer. However, DMAE appeared to be toxic to the skin cells. Cell division was stopped and some skin cells were killed after 24 hours of exposure. Dr. Francois Marceau believes DMAE skin cream is safer than a real facelift, or botox injections.    Comments: It is very difficult to extrapolate the results of a study done on in a laboratory petri dish on cultured cells versus what would happen when actual people use a product that has DMAE, ala, coq10, along with a couple of dozen of other ingredients. Often, we researchers do a study, they use massive amounts of a substance in order to elicit a response. Many nutrients and drugs could be beneficial in small amounts yet toxic in large amounts. Furthermore, the response of skin cells in a Petri dish is different than what would occur in a living person. Having said all this, the jury is still out regarding the benefit or risk of the use of Source Naturals DMAE skin cream. Until at least a 6 month trial has been done with this product in humans and then a biopsy is done of cells exposed to it, we will not have a clear answer.  For the time being, those who are interested in using  Source Naturals DMAE skin cream may consider using it only 2 or 3 times a week.

   A. We do not see any problems with the DMAE cream and Mind Power Rx used together.

Q. I just would like to inquire if this DMAE cream can be used around the eye area and will it help minimize fine lines around it?
   A. Some people have their skin irritated if the DMAE cream is used around the eyes, if you plan to do so, only use the dmae cream twice a week at first to see how you skin deals with it. However, we first suggest you use it on another part of your face to see how your skin reacts. We have not seen any studies with DMAE skin cream product in regards to wrinkle lessening, so we can't say if it helps with fine lines.
