Monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) were one of the first class of drugs marketed for the treatment of depression. However, due to severe side effects, restrictive dietary prohibitions, and the fear of hypertensive crisis, monoamine oxidase inhibitors are used infrequently for the treatment of depression.
