N-acetyl-d-glucosamine by Ray Sahelian, M.D.
N-Acetyl-D-Glucosamine (N-AcetylGlucosamine, or NAG) is a monosaccharide derivative of glucose, an amide between glucosamine and acetic acid. N-Acetyl-D-Glucosamine is part of a biopolymer in the bacterial cell wall, built from alternating units of N-Acetyl-D-Glucosamine and N-acetylmuramic acid. N-Acetyl-D-Glucosamineis the monomeric unit of the polymer chitin, which forms the outer coverings of insects and crustaceans.
As of April 2008, I could not find human studies with N-Acetyl-D-Glucosamine supplements.
