N-acetylglucosamine and immune
system
N-acetylglucosamine may have an influence on autoimmune conditions. Dr. Michael Demetriou and colleagues at the University of
California at Irvine found that N-acetylglucosamine, when given to mice, inhibited the growth and
function of abnormal T-cells that incorrectly direct the immune system to attack
specific tissues in the body, such as brain myelin in MS and insulin-producing
cells of the pancreas in diabetes. Whether the same benefits would occur in
humans is not clear at this time.
