Oxymatrine is an extract from a traditional Chinese herb called Sophora flavescens.
Effects of oxymatrine on serum cytokines and hepatic fibrotic indexes in patients with chronic hepatitis B

To study the effect of oxymatrine on serum cytokines and hepatic fibrotic indexes in patients with chronic hepatitis B. Eighty-two CHB patients were randomly assigned to the control group treated with Western routine therapy and the treated group treated by Western routine therapy plus oxymatrine. The treatment course was 24 weeks. Another group with 20 healthy subjects was set as the normal control group. The serum levels of transforming growth factor-beta1 (TGF-beta1), interleukin-6 (IL-6), hyaline acid (HA), collagen type IV (C-IV) and laminin were measured by ELISA and RIA before and after treatment. The serum levels of TGF-beta1, IL-6, HA, C-IV and laminin in chronic hepatitis B patients were significantly higher than those in the normal control group. After 24-week treatment with oxymatrine, these abnormal indexes in the treated group were significantly lowered, as compared with those before treatment and in the control group, the differences were significant. Oxymatrine could lower the levels of cytokines, including TGF-beta1, IL-6, etc. in patients with CHB, which might be one of the mechanisms of its action in reversing liver fibrosis.
Observations on clinic curative effect of oxymatrine to cure hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS)

Randomly divide 418 patients suffering from hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome into a treatment group and a control group, use oxymatrine to give an intravenous drip to the patients in the treatment group, one time a day, each time 600 mg, lasting for 7 days as one period of treatment and meanwhile take a traditional equilibrium salt treatment for the patients in the control group. Oxymatrine has a certainly true curative effect to hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome and worth of furthering its widespread use in clinics.

Oxymatrine is proven to protect ischemic and reperfusion injury in liver, intestine and heart, this effect is via anti-inflammation and anti-apoptosis. Whether this protective effect applies to ischemic injury in brain, we therefore investigate the potential neuroprotective role of oxymatrine and the underlying mechanisms. Oxymatrine reduced infarct volume induced by permanent middle cerebral artery occlusion, this effect may be through the decreasing of NF-kappaB expression.

Intestinal ischemia / reperfusion (I/R) is a common and serious clinical condition. The anti-inflammatory and anti-apoptotic properties of oxymatrine have been shown to protect the liver from I/R injury and attenuate colitis. The objective of this study was to investigate if oxymatrine could attenuate intestinal I/R injury induced in rats. Our results provide further evidence of the anti-inflammatory and anti-apoptotic activities of oxymatrine, which may become a potent drug for protecting the intestines against I/R injury.

Accumulating evidence indicates that oxymatrine may exert a protective effect on the cardiovascular system. The study was designed to explore the possible role of oxymatrine against myocardial ischemic damage and several related signaling pathways as potential mechanisms. The protective properties of oxymatrine were studied in a rat model of acute myocardial infarction due to permanent ligation of the left anterior descending coronary artery. The results showed that administration of oxymatrine relieved myocardial injuries during ischemia, and this was achieved by protecting cardiomyocytes from apoptotic death. The beneficial effects of oxymatrine were likely mediated by an inhibition of lipid peroxidation (MDA production) and an increase in endogenous antioxidant activity (SOD), activation of the survival signaling molecule (Bcl-2), and a reduction of apoptotic mediator (Fas) and intracellular Ca2+ overload.

A rapid, sensitive and selective high-performance liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometric method has been developed and validated for the simultaneous determination of matrine, oxymatrine and oxysophocarpine in rat plasma after oral administration of Sophora flavescens Ait. extract using pseudoephedrine hydrochloride as an internal standard. This was the first report on determination of the major quinolizidine alkaloids in rat plasma after oral administration of Sophora flavescens Ait. extract. The results provided a meaningful basis for evaluating the clinical applications of the herbal medicine.
