Paeoniae Radix or Chinese Peony is a commonly used traditional Chinese
medicine often for the treatment of
rheumatoid
arthritis. See
Chinese Herbs of list of herbs used in Chinese Medicine.
There are several species of Peony: Paeonia lactiflora,
Paeonia suffruticosa, and Paeonia officinalis are some of the ones used as
herbs.
Peony officinalis is found in
Good Night Rx, a
product helpful as a natural relief for occasional sleeplessness.
Family Paeoniaceae – Peony family
Genus Paeonia L. – peony plant
Species Paeonia lactiflora Pallas – Chinese peony

fall asleep and stay asleep without the side effects common to prescription
sleeping pills.
Suggested Use:
Take one capsule of Good Night Rx one to three hours before sleep, preferably
on an empty stomach. Good Night Rx does not work as well
when taken with a meal.

Speciation through homoploid hybridization between allotetraploids in
peonies (Paeonia).
Proc Natl Acad Sci U S A. 2001 Mar 27;98(7):3915-9. Ferguson D, Sang T.
Department of Botany and Plant Pathology, Michigan State University, East
Lansing, MI 48824, USA.
Phylogenies of Adh1 and Adh2 genes suggest that a widespread Mediterranean
peony, Paeonia officinalis, is a homoploid hybrid species between two
allotetraploid species, Paeonia peregrina and a member of the Paeonia arietina
species group. Three phylogenetically distinct types of Adh sequences have been
identified from both accessions of P. officinalis, of which two types are most
closely related to the two homoeologous Adh loci of the P. arietina group and
the remaining type came from one of the two Adh homoeologs of P. peregrina. The
other Adh homoeolog of P. peregrina was apparently lost from the hybrid genome,
possibly through backcrossing with the P. arietina group.

Influence of co-administrated sinomenine on pharmacokinetic fate of
paeoniflorin in unrestrained conscious rats.
J Ethnopharmacol. 2005 May 13;99(1):61-7.
Paeonia lactiflora Pall. (Ranunculaceae) root ( Chinese Peony ) and Sinomenium acutum Rehder and
Wilson (Menispermaceae) stem are two herbs widely used in Chinese medicine to
treat rheumatoid arthritis. While, in theory, either herb could be used alone,
in practice, Chinese medicine practitioners prescribe them together. Studies on
pharmacokinetic interaction between the active constituents of these two herbs
-- peony
and sinomenine, respectively -- provide empirical evidence to support their
clinical practice. A single dose of paeoniflorin (150mg/kg) alone and with
sinomenine hydrochloride (90mg/kg) was administered by gastric gavage to
unrestrained conscious male Sprague-Dawley rats (n=6, 250-300g). After co-administration of sinomenine, the peak plasma
concentration of paeoniflorin was elevated, the peak time was delayed, the mean residence time (MRT)
was prolonged, the C(L) was decreased and the V(d) was reduced. These results indicate that sinomenine hydrochloride at 90mg/kg
significantly improved the bioavailability of paeoniflorin in rats.
Paeoniflorin: an antihyperlipidemic agent from Paeonia lactiflora.
Fitoterapia. 2004 Jan;75(1):45-9.
Paeoniflorin (1), isolated from the methanol extract of peony,
showed a lowering effect on cholesterol level in the experimentally-induced
hyperlipidemic rats. Paeoniflorin showed a significantly lowering effect of
total cholesterol, LDL and triglyceride levels compared with the control group
at the dose of 200 and 400 mg/kg, p.o. once a day for 4 weeks.
[The effect of the extract from Radix Paeoniae alba
( white peony root ) on IgA
Glomerulonephritis in mice]
Zhong Yao Cai. 2003 Feb;26(2):109-11.
To observe the effect of the extract from Radix Paeoniae Alba (
white peony root ) on IgA glomerulonephritis in mice. METHODS: IgA
glomerulonephritis was induced by injection of dextran and sephadex-150.
After administrating the extract, the contents of urinary protein, BUN and
Cr in serum were determined. RESULTS: The extract could inhibit the
decline of mouse weight, and decrease urinary protein content and BUN
content in serum. While, the extract had no effect on Cr in serum.
CONCLUSION: The extract from Radix Paeoniae Alba had therapeutical effect
on IgA glomerulonephritis. To learn more about

Inhibition of inducible nitric oxide synthase and cyclooxygenase-2
activity by 1,2,3,4,6-penta-O-galloyl-beta-D-glucose in murine macrophage cells.
Arch Pharm Res. 2003 Oct;26(10):832-9.
Activated macrophages express inducible isoforms of nitric oxide synthase (iNOS)
and cyclooxygenase (COX-2), and produce excessive amounts of nitric oxide (NO)
and prostaglandin E2 (PGE2), which play key roles in the processes of
inflammation and carcinogenesis. The root of Paeonia lactiflora Pall. ( Chinese
Peony ), and the
root cortex of Paeonia suffruticosa Andr., are important Chinese crude drugs
used in many traditional prescriptions. 1,2,3,4,6-penta-O-galloyl-beta-D-glucose
(PGG) is a major bioactive constituent of both crude drugs. PGG has been shown
to possess potent anti-oxidant, anti-mutagenic, anti-proliferative and
anti-invasive effects. In this study, we examined the inhibitory effects of
1,2,3,4,6-penta-O-galloyl-beta-D-glucose (PGG) isolated from the root of Chinese
Peony. on the COX-2 and iNOS activity in LPS-activated Raw 264.7
cells, COX-1 in HEL cells. Although further studies are needed to elucidate the molecular
mechanisms and structure-activity relationship by which PGG exerts its
inhibitory actions, our results suggest that PGG might be a candidate for
developing anti-inflammatory and cancer chemopreventive agents. Peony flower.
Antioxidative activity of resveratrol and its derivatives isolated from
seeds of Paeonia lactiflora.
Biosci Biotechnol Biochem. 2002 Sep;66(9):1990-3.
Seven stilbenes, a new cis-epsilon-viniferin and the six known stilbenes,
trans-resveratrol, trans-resveratrol-4'-O-beta-D-glucopyranoside, trans-epsilon-viniferin,
gnetin H, and suffruticosol A and B, were isolated and identified from seeds of
Chinese Peony plant. These results suggest that resveratrol dimers and trimers, together with resveratrol from
peony seeds may be useful as potential sources of natural antioxidants. Peony

Cytotoxic and antimutagenic stilbenes from Peony seeds of Paeonia lactiflora.
Arch Pharm Res. 2002 Jun;25(3):293-9.
Cytotoxic and antimutagenic effects of a novel cis-epsilon-viniferin and five
known stilbenes, transresveratrol, trans-epsilon-viniferin, gnetin H,
suffruticosols A and B, isolated from the seeds of peony were determined against five different cancer cell lines, and mutagenicity of
N-methyl-N'-nitro-N-nitrosoguanidine (MNNG) in Salmonella typhimurium TA100,
respectively. Six stilbenes showed cytotoxic activity in a dose-dependent
manner, and especially did potent cytotoxic activity against C6 (mouse glioma)
cancer cell with IC50 values ranging from 8.2 to 20.5 microg/ml. trans- Resveratrol
showed significant cytotoxic activity against HepG2 (liver hepatoma) and HT-29
(colon) human cancer cell lines.
