There are thousands of ingredients in foods and herbs, and dozens of companies in the US and hundreds worldwide provide ingredients for supplement and food products.

The Top 10 Food and Drinks Ingredient companies are Kerry Group, Tate & Lyle, DSM, CSM, Corn Products International, Ajinomoto, Danisco, Südzucker, BASF and Archer Daniels Midland.

Supplements industry establishes ingredient information exchange
Better flow of information between ingredients suppliers and end-product makers, greater efficiency and speedier transactions will be the result of a data exchange initiative. This cooperative effort will be between the American Herbal Products Association (AHPA), the Consumer Healthcare Products Association (CHPA), the Council for Responsible Nutrition (CRN), and the Natural Products Association (NPA). Called Standardized Information on Dietary Ingredients (SIDI), the protocol aims to overcome "discrepancies and confusion" in gathering data on dietary ingredients.
With thousands of raw dietary ingredients in use today, and thousands of buyers and sellers of these ingredients, identifying and properly qualifying the appropriate ingredient from a trustworthy source is a time- and resource-consuming process.

The SIDI protocol includes three standardized information sheets:

Product Information Data Sheet — includes subsections for nonbotanical and botanical ingredients, and product-specific physical, manufacturing and regulatory information.
Site Quality Overview — evaluates fundamental site-specific manufacturing practices and quality systems of suppliers.
Supply Chain Security Overview — provides an overview of a supplier's plans to protect ingredient and supply continuity while preserving proprietary details of security controls.

Q. I ran across an ad for a book claiming that supplements are not helping if we don't consume the 'missing ingredient' available in a supplement. It is called "The Missing Ingredient for Good Health" by Lee Euler. Is there such a supplement? I feel this "The Missing Ingredient for Good Health"  book may be a rip-off due to the large price and small size of the book.
   A. We have not heard of this book and we have no idea what the author means by "missing ingredient."

Q.  I have a question about finding vitamin products that do not contain Chinese ingredients. From the problems with heparin and wheat gluten contamination to the toxicity of many Chinese ingredient imports, I am increasingly concerned about the purity of my vitamin products. An example is vitamin C. I heard that the majority of vitamin C comes from China and I would like to avoid Chinese made ascorbic acid. What are your views on this problem-and is it possible to eliminate Chinese ingredients?
   A.  it is too difficult since the contents of products on the market can vary from batch to batch regarding the raw ingredients. There may be one batch where the ingredients are made in the US, and then the next batch the company could decide to purchase the ingredients from China or another country depending on price fluctuations, availability, or other factors. It is too complicated and impractical to try to avoid all Chinese ingredients since there are tens of thousands of supplement products on the market.

Q. Given recent report about imports from China I would like to know if supplement products sold in the USA use ingredients and/or components from China.
   A. Most vitamin stores and online supplement companies carry hundreds of products and some of the formulas have dozens of herbs, and it is possible there could be some from China. You are not likely to find any supplements sellers who carry a wide selection to be completely free of products from overseas, including China. Some herbs are only grown in China.

Q. Is there an information source that will give straight answers on the sources for supplement ingredients? Knowing that chondroitan comes from shellfish is very helpful to those that have shellfish problems. Some items, such as carnitine, that are from animal sources, do not specify the animals involved. What about carnosine? People who need to avoid porcine and shellfish sources would find it helpful to have that information available rather than having to avoid what might be a very helpful supplement for lack of knowledge about ingredient sources.
   A. There are various manufacturers who use different sources and processes, so it is difficult to have one source that lists all the ingredients and how they are made. Many ingredients come from overseas. Each ingredient has to be looked at by itself regarding which manufacturer is making it and how they are making it.

Q. I would like to purchase natural supplements but there are so many ingredients coming from China going into supplements that we and others we know are starting to buy only supplements guaranteed not ingredients from China and not formulated there either.
   A. Unfortunately there are certain herbs that only grow in China and therefore it may not be feasible to obtain 100 percent of ingredients China-free. Raw ingredient importers are required by law to test all materials for purity and potency before reselling.
